Charles Darwin

Rescue Date
30th November 2012

Story
I Have a Theory

Charles Darwin, the survivor of a debilitating farm accident, walks with a severe neck twist that causes him to look partially skyward. His left leg skis across the grass with each awkward step and his back legs do not follow the tracks of his front. His plucky resolve to beat odds that would have claimed the life of a less determined soul immediately touched the hearts of his farming family.  Recognizing that Charles would need special ongoing care and a suitable paddock, the call was made to Edgar’s Mission.

While some may look at the awkward ‘Quasimodo’ looking Charles and wonder why he remains alive, one look into his eyes tells you he very much wants to be here.  And sure, he certainly looks different from the other sheep, yet we know inside nothing has diminished his ‘raison d’etre’ (reason for being); he loves the sunshine, enjoys playing with his buddies Bubbles and Babe, comes running as fast as he can when he sees the feed bucket and enjoys the touch of human kindness with great relish- especially when it comes in the form of a good old back scratch.

While the name Charles Darwin has become synonymous with the well postulated theory of evolution and the survival of the most fitting, we trust that after meeting our woolly Charles, many will walk away with a new found theory; recognizing that all animals (both human and non-human) want, need, deserve and respond to one thing- kindness.

Don't underestimate the emotional lives of farm animals. According to new research, mama goats recall their babies' bleats at least a year after mother and kid are separated.

The study is one of the few to test whether the mother-child bond in animals lasts after the first period of dependence ends. It seems that goats, at least, remember their family ties long-term.

"They still react more to the calls of the kid from a previous year than to the calls of familiar kids born to other females" a year after weaning, said study researcher Elodie Briefer, a postdoctoral researcher at Queen Mary, University of London. "That means they have a long-term memory of the calls of their kids."

Wilfred the Goat Escapes in Brooklyn

Published on Feb 13, 2013

Local news coverage of a goat found running around the Bed-Steu section of Brooklyn, NY. The goat, now named Wilfred, is safe and sound at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. You can follow his story on our website at: http://www.woodstocksanctuary.org

On February 8, 2013 New York’s ABC and CBS news affiliates covered the story of a fugitive goat who was spotted running around Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn in the middle of the night. After hiding behind cars and darting from cops, the goat, now named Wilfred, was eventually caught by a hospital security guard who happened to be a former goat herder in West Africa.

Police officers spotted Wilfred on the busy Brooklyn thoroughfare around 1:30 a.m. The officers were pursuing the runaway and calling for backup when he veered into a parking lot across from a hospital. After an on-foot chase around the parking lot, the hospital’s security guard grabbed Wilfred by the horns and held him while police hog-tied the terrified four-legged escapee and put him into the back of a patrol car. Officers then drove him to Animal Care & Control in Manhattan. The tags in his ears indicate that he escaped from a neighborhood slaughterhouse.

It was speculated that Wilfred would be returned to the slaughter facility. But Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary mobilized quickly !!!!

“He’ll never face a butcher’s block again” reports WFAS Director Jenny Brown. “Here he will receive the love and care that he deserves and will live out the rest of his life free and in peace with other goats — and around 200 other rescued farmed animals.”

Cow Escapes Slaughterhouse, Finds Sanctuary

The brave cow who managed to escape from the perils of a Paterson, New Jersey slaughterhouse has found sanctuary and received a heartwarming bovine fairytale thanks to an upstate New York man.

Animal rights advocate Mike Stura rescued the 750-pound cow and guided it to a Woodstock, New York animal sanctuary where as Stura put, "He'll never end up on someone's plate, that's for sure."

A veterinarian treated the dehydrated cow and found it had been struck by a vehicle, causing the animal to lose some blood and incur an infection.

The sanctuary specifically works to find homes for farm animals including cows, pigs, sheep, and more.

On Tuesday, Paterson's chief animal control officer confirmed the cow's safety and reassured the owner of the slaughterhouse would not claim her again.

This hard-to-watch video comes on the heels of other investigative videos exposing cruelty in the pork industry, including COK's recent exposé of a massive pig breeding facility in Iowa revealing that animal cruelty is standard industry practice.

While other industry giants, including Smithfield Foods, Hormel, and Cargill, are at least starting to phase out the use of gestation crates for mother pigs, Tyson continues to drag its feet and has failed to take any steps towards reforming its cruel practices. Even major retailers such as Burger King, McDonald's, and Safeway have agreed to remove gestation crates from their supply chains.

Act now: Urge Tyson Foods to phase out gestation crates.

Better yet, you can stand up for pigs every time you sit down to eat simply by choosing vegetarian foods. Visit Try Veg.com today -- and be sure to also check out this vegan recipe that takes the oink out of pulled BBQ pork.

I'm often asked by my friends why I don't eat eggs or products made with eggs. There are many reasons but this is one of them.

For those who are not familiar with this standard practice of egg farming: Hens have a natural lifespan of 20 years but they are killed at around 18 months because their egg production drops after that. They are replaced by new hens. That means new chicks need to be hatched constantly to replace the hens that are being killed. 50% of all newly hatched chicks are male, but they can’t lay eggs. So they are killed at birth, usually by being thrown away like garbage or by being ground up alive.

Both mother and baby chickens die for eggs. This applies equally to battery eggs, “organic” eggs, or “free-range” eggs.

IOWA Update: Last Pending Ag-Gag Bill Dies
Story BY CHERYL LEAHY

Iowa's legislative session has just ended, and with it, the Iowa "Ag Gag" bill's chances of passing this year. With the failure of this bill, on the heels of the failure of New York's similar bill last Friday, every one of the four legislative attempts made to silence the documentation of the brutal realities of factory farms have failed this year.

Iowa's HF-589 / SJ-1084, introduced by Rep. Annette Sweeny
( District 44 ), would have criminalized the act of recording conditions for animal on agribusiness facilties without permission from the owner, clearly intending to shut down undercover investigations of factory farms exposing abuse.

These investigations are the public's window into the unimaginable suffering that is business-as-usual behind the closed doors of the meat, egg, and dairy industries. This is vital link to the otherwise secretive and deceptive world of factory farming. Just yesterday, in fact, an undercover investigation exposing the cruel realities of the pork  industry  on  an  Iowa  factory  farm ( still image above )  was

released by Mercy For Animals.

While we celebrate this victory for the animals and thank everyone who worked diligently this year to fight against these unconstitutional bills, we remain aware of the very real possibility that these attempts will return next year. It's important to continue to fight to protect our right to uncover and expose the truth about creul conditions forced upon the billions of animals who suffer needlessly for us to eat meat, milk and eggs.

In the meantime, the most important step each of us can take to protect animals is to simply leave them off our plates.

Thank you Cheryl

New York Ag-Gag Bill is Dead!

The New York legislative session ends today, rendering the state's "Ag Gag" bill (S 5172) officially dead for the year. Had this bill passed, it would have made it illegal to conduct undercover exposés of factory farms in the state of New York.

Introduced by Senator Patty Ritchie (R - 48th District), S-5172 had advanced through the early stages of the legislative process, quietly passing through the Agriculture committee and making its way to the Senate floor. After the required three "reading" days, it could have been eligible for a vote if the Senate Majority Leader Dean Kelos had chosen to bring it up for debate. Fortunately, the session ended before this issue was debated and we--and the animals--can breathe a collective sigh of relief for the right to expose the horrific conditions inside New York State's factory farms  -- at least for this legislative year.

New York was the fourth state this year to introduce an "Ag Gag" bill intended to  shut down undercover investigations exposing the abuses behind the closed doors of animal agribusiness. While we celebrate the failed attempts to curtail our First Amendment rights in New York as well Minnesota and Florida, we're still carefully watching Iowa, where a similar Ag Gag bill is still pending, and we encourage Iowans to voice their opposition.
